Water supplay

Index       Pressure         State      Response

An important part of natural conditions forming is water bodies, the main one is the Dnipro river with Kyivskii and Kanivskii reservoirs on it. Within Kyiv the Dnipro river has small tributaries, they are Syrets, Glybochitsa, Lybid. The Nivka river falls into Irpen, that is the right Dnipro tributary.

Within Kyiv, in addition to such a considerable waterway as the Dnipro river, there are 370 internal reservoirs and water currents.

On Kyiv territory there are 170 lakes and ponds.

Use of these water bodies is various. It is for recreation and for fish-breeding, for decorative purpose and etc. Besides that, waters of the Dnipro and Desna rivers and also artesian waters are used for water supply, for consumer and industrial needs of the town. One of the main consequences of Kyiv social and economic development is using of enormous water mass for consumer and economic needs satisfaction. In structure of Kyiv needs in water the consumer sector and the industrial one are the almost equal parts. A waste water disposal are realized by 28 enterprises. 8 water users dispose of the industrial sewages immediately into the Dnipro river and other reservoirs. It is almost 95 % of total volume of wastes waters. Other enterprises dispose of polluted water to the municipal sewerage (both with previous treatment and without it), then goes to the treatment facilities of the Bortnitska aeration station. Water pollution takes place also during wastes disposal filtration at the wastes storages.

Radioactive, chemical and bacteriological radiation is observed at water bodies. A lot of water bodies do not have the suitable status. Most water bodies have not water protection littoral zones. As a result, for last ten years water supply problems of Kyiv became aggravated because of sharp water quality worsening at water bodies.

That's why one of the most important arrangements for water quality improvement is building and modernization of treatment facilities, repair of drainage collectors, strict control over enterprises disposals.
