During the last ten years water supply problems in Kyiv increase in connection with sharp water quality decreasing at water bodies. The main source of municipal water provision is the Dnipro river. It is under extraordinary radioactive influence of Kurska (Seim), Smolenska (Desna), atomic stations Rivenska (Styr), Khmelnitska (Goryn) and Chornobylska (Pryp'yat) atomic stations. They are placed in the Dnipro river zone of flow forming. Disastrous effects at the Chornobylska Atomic Station became the catastrophic ones for the Dnipro watershed. A radio-ecological situation in Kyiv reservoirs today is formed at the expense of nuclides of strontium-90 (radio nuclede period of semi-decay is Ò1/2=28.6 years) and of caesium-137 (Ò1/2=30 years). Radioactive Dnipro components pollution within Kyiv today exceeds corresponding pre-disaster indices.

Chemical and bacteriological surface water pollution considerably increases. The most of river waters does not correspond to economic and drinking water supply norms upon indices of pollution by pesticides, organic combinations, phenols and petrochemical.

Water Code of Ukraine envisages littoral protective stripes relating to the category of water fund lands. They needs corresponding water protective status and special regulated using. But to this day littoral protective stripe plots are not marked. In some regions these lands are using for building, and first of all for country-cottage building.

Littoral stripes of the little rivers Sovka, Nivka, Lybed and others are waste dumps. There the river-beds are filled up and private garages and built.

Almost all of water currents and internal reservoirs have not the littoral water protective stripes, though they are required by the state norms. That's why a reservoir bottom is even silted. Bottom sediments factually are unorganized waste dumps. The river-beds, small rivers banks and reservoirs are chocked up by branches, waste motor-car tyres and consumer wastes.

A problem of water protective zones and littoral protective stripes creation is increasing now in connection with general worsening of these reservoirs state and keeping up funds limitation. So, Sovskii ponds cascade, dwelling massif Obolon lakes, Gorikhovatskiye ponds system in Golosiivo, Shevchenkove settlement ponds and other reservoirs have an especially bed state.

From 400 internal reservoirs and water currents are use of land organized on 49 %. On some Kyiv reservoirs there are emergency situations. At Gorenka (Vodytsya) river pond a dam with capacity construction is broken. The Darnitsya river is overcrowded by sevage waters and enterprises wastes. It led to groundwater level rising; Vyrlitsya (Kharkov region) and Almazne (Vatutinskii region) lakes (scheme 6.3 6.4 6.2) are under influence of engineering communications. A problem of water level degradation of the Kyiv left bank needs to be solved.

Excessive the Dnipro flow regulation caused sharp stream slowing down, condition worsening of sewage and river waters interfusion and their self-purification, as well as violation of water using sanitary conditions.

Today municipal reservoirs and water currents are changed into water bodies of overwhelmingly sewage feeding. That's why their water quality depends on proper structure of surface flow that is not sufficiently explored, changeable. By the lack of purification it can lead to unforeseen sanitary - epidemic situations.

From the town territory surface outflow is drainaged by collectors network of sewerage system. Technical operation of treatment facilities of them does not provide sufficient purification quality of sewage waters. As a result of that a considerable volume of linear and surface flow contains the insufficiently purified or unpurified wastes of industrial and municipal enterprises as well as the wash from areas and streets. It leads to unsatisfactory sanitary state of water bodies Kyiv. Some reservoirs transformed into collectors of sewage waters. A typical example is the Lybed river flowing on territory of seven Kyiv regions, they are: Shevchenkovskii, Zhovtnevyi, Radyanskii, Zaliznychnyi, Moskovskii, Pecherskii and Kharkovskii regions. On its banks there are over 350 big and small enterprises and economic units. Only 37 from them have water-purifying facilities (less 11%). In sewage waters that get into the Lybed river from industrial grounds without purification, a contents of pollutant matters 30-40 times exceeds the maximum admissible concentrations. 75 % its low water level flow is composed by the industrial sewages. Their considerable amount flows down then into the Dnipro river.

Besides the Lybed river there is the Nivka river as one of the most polluted reservoirs in the town for a long time. (in the contents of such indicators as BOD , COD, the petrochemical is composed accordingly 3.5, 3.6, 24 GDK (limit concentration). The other polluted reservoirs are also Syretskii brook, the Opechin lake. (schemes 6.2 6.3 6.4 )

An ungrounded and unregulable violation of water exchange on Kyiv territory leads to development of negative geologic and other naturally technogenic processes. So, the underestimate of aggradative loamy sand soils properties caused catastrophic mudflow in 13 March 1961.There after dam break a mud mass by volume over 700 th. m3 gushed out on talweg of Babib Yar to Podil. In July 1997 a soil disposition is livened up in the Kudryavska street.

According to specialists evaluations, a total soil disposition area in the town zone reaches 4 th. hectares, from this about 40 % have technogenic genesis. For post-war period here over 300 soil dispositions was observed. From 120 of them only 25 % ones can be thought stabilized.

The other ecological problem of Kyiv is a treatment solid consumer wastes and their utilization. At the Kyiv municipal landfill (Pyrogiv, today closed) there are 45 mln. m3 of consumer wastes that leads to its emergency state. Solid dump thickness is only 17 m, and beneath there is mobile mass (so-called is a "filtrate"). Its horizon is 15 m above the level of protective constructions. High concentrations of 33 heavy metals salts are revealed in the filtrate. It caused intensive growth of underground waters.
